Weekly responsibilities include writing news and features covering the economics and corporate finance beats; writing the weekly Data Points column; compiling the latest data for BIV's Economics Dashboard, and Insider Trading sections; managing the research team involved in the publication of BIV's signature industry lists; researching the paper's major editorial projects including the Top 100 lists, B.C.'s fastest growing companies, B.C.'s Biggest Deals; and writing major business features, data-based stories and profiles of industry leaders in B.C.

Member of the senior editorial team involved in the major redesign of the newspaper and website that launched in May 2012, and administrator of some of BIV's business awards including BIV's Forty Under 40 awards. BC CFO of the Year Award and BIV's CEO Awards.

Key responsibilities included: researching BIV's weekly industry lists and major projects; writing for BIV's Daily Online Edition; and writing news stories in a variety of beats including small business, social entrepreneurship, manufacturing, agriculture, corporate finance, economics, technology, resources, philanthropy and B.C.'s credit union system.

In addition to improving the administration of BIV's Forty Under 40 awards, improved the efficiency of BIV's editorial research and managed to increase the number of industry lists by more than 50% to more than 75 at its peak.

General news reporter responsible for writing eight-to-15-inch hard news stories, news features, and business stories on a daily basis.

Stories ranged from local reaction to world events (Vancouver's urban search and rescue team in Louisiana, Harry Potter book 6, death of Pope John Paul II, installation of Pope Benedict XVI), local news (2005 provincial election coverage, Mt. Logan rescue), business news (Port of Vancouver strike, 2005 blueberry crop, poultry industry after avian flu), crime stories (pimps recruiting at elementary schools, eagle poaching) and news features (Vancouver Special Olympics gold medal winners).

More than 215 stories were published, some having run in other daily papers including the National Post, Victoria Times-Colonist, Edmonton Journal, Kingston Whig-Standard and the Ottawa Citizen.

TV Reporter Intern
CBC Canada Now Vancouver

May - July 2004

One of three interns selected for the CBC Canada Now Vancouver Internship Program. Responsibilities included researching and making calls for various news stories, going out with cameraperson to collect interviews, and working with an editor to piece together newsclips.

Involved in the CBC Canada Now national coverage of the 2004 Federal Election. Responsibilities included being on the assignment desk routing calls from reporters to show producers, live fact-checking for writers with the election computer, cataloguing election videotape as it came into the newsroom.

Special projects I produced included a "Tribute to Valedictorians," a 60-second clip of Valedictorian speeches from Lower Mainland high schools. Producer responsibilities included finding grad ceremony dates and selecting a balanced mix of students from around the Lower Mainland, contacting the school for permission, arranging logistics with concert theatre technical and house staff, directing the camera person on location, writing the script, and working with an editor to put together piece. "Valedictorians 2004" ran for two weeks on CBC Canada Now, and for a week on CBC Radio One.

Intern reporter for the newspaper, writing news briefs, researching and writing news and feature stories requiring third-party, professional analysis in addition to basic reporting. The range of written subjects included the Vancouver Port Authority, legal research, fashion trends, environmental waste management, the RAV project, and corporate education.

Managed the Youth Express section of SGI Canada's national magazine by generating ideas, organizing the production schedule, writing articles, interviewing youth from across Canada, meeting deadlines, designing page layout with Quark Xpress and proof-reading before publication.

Worked with the Chinese Chief Editor, being responsible for entire English portion of the newspaper by coordinating production with Chinese portion of the newspaper, generating ideas for articles, establishing and enforcing deadlines, ghost-writing if necessary, final editing before publication, as well as assisting in promotion and distribution of paper to the community.
